Green / LEED Overview

Herman Miller has a long standing commitment to environmental friendly facilities and designing environmentally conscious products. As a founding member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), Herman Miller has practiced sustainability from day one. The USGBC is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to understanding and promoting sound environmental building practices. One of Herman Miller’s manufacturing facilities appropriately named, “Greenhouse”, was built in 1993 and was a pilot for the development of the USGBC’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification process. Furthermore, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency conducted a study that validated the Greenhouse’s financial and environmental performance. Today, Herman Miller is committed to building or renovating its facilities to achieve at least a "Silver" LEED rating.

Herman Miller’s products have also earned McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC) Cradle to Cradle certification. This means using environmentally safe and healthy materials; design for material reutilization such as recycling or composting; the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency; efficient use of water, maximum water quality associated with production; and instituting strategies for social responsibility.
